Local Polk County Teen Gains Greater Independence Thanks to Wheelchairs 4 Kids and Gerner Family Charitable Foundation
Lakeland, Florida — Thirteen-year-old Kailebe, a caring, sensitive, and resilient young man, is experiencing greater independence and safer transportation thanks to a vehicle modification provided through Wheelchairs 4 Kids and generously sponsored by the Gerner Family Charitable Foundation.
Kailebe was diagnosed with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy nearly four years ago. Despite the challenges associated with his condition, he continues to approach life with determination and a kind heart. He also participates in research studies that help doctors and researchers better understand Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy and work toward improved treatments and support for children like him.
Kailebe is a curious and enthusiastic learner who loves watching educational videos on YouTube. Spanish is his favorite subject in school. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys playing video games, swimming, visiting nature areas where he can see animals, and collecting some of his favorite things, including coins, Pokémon cards, squishy fidgets, miniature ducks, and No. 2 pencils. His love of animals is another special part of his personality. Raccoons and turtles are his favorites, and when it comes to food, nothing beats his mom’s shrimp Alfredo pasta.
As Kailebe’s mobility needs have increased, transporting his wheelchair safely and conveniently has become an important part of helping him get to school, medical appointments, and activities in his community. Through Wheelchairs 4 Kids, Kailebe received a vehicle modification that includes a wheelchair lift installed on the back of his parents’ truck.
The new lift gives his family a safer, more accessible way to transport his wheelchair, making it easier for Kailebe to get where he needs to go without his family having to worry about the challenges of transporting his equipment.
For Kailebe, increased accessibility means more opportunities to participate in the everyday experiences that matter most, going to school, attending medical appointments, spending time with his family, exploring his community, and enjoying the activities he loves.
Thanks to Wheelchairs 4 Kids and the generous sponsorship of the Gerner Family Charitable Foundation, Kailebe now has greater independence, and his family has an important resource to help make daily transportation easier and safer. This vehicle modification is more than a lift. Wheelchairs 4 Kids is dedicated to improving the lives of children with physical disabilities by providing wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and other necessary medical equipment at no charge to their families through its Let’s Roll program.
